IDEAS SHEET
The type of SFX we plan to use in our film is stunt prop and prosthetic makeup. We will have a stunt prop in this by having a character throw a star knife and have a stabbing towards the end. Also, we will use prosthetic makeup by making the bruises from the stabbing look realistic.

TECHNICAL PROPOSAL (BASED ON CHOSEN SCRIPT)
EFFECT 1 - KNIFE THROWN AT CHARACTER TO BODY
A) WHAT IS THE EFFECT?
The first effect is the illusion that a knife has been thrown from the other side of the room and has resulted in another person getting hurt by this (one person throws the knife, the other gets hurt).
B) WHY IS IT NEEDED/HOW DOES IT MAKE THE AUDIENCE FEEL?
This effect is needed to create a sense of tension for the audience in a way which makes them feel as though they are in the moment. Also, having effects as dramatic as this can bring a sense of realism for the audience and make them feel as though the fight is real, which can overall lead to the audience being more engaged with the production/ensure that they are invested.
C) HOW DOES THE EFFECT WORK?
The effect works by using camera movement as a trick to make it believable. For example, firstly the camera does a shot of the character throwing the knife. This is then followed by doing a whip pan to the other character with the knife "inside" them.
Having the whip pan of the camera gives the illusion that the knife has gone inside the other character without actually doing this (it cuts between the scenes in reality but when viewing it, it goes unnoticed).
D) WHAT MATERIALS WOULD YOU NEED?
In terms of materials, you would not need many materials to make it look good (if you play around with lighting and angles it can make it look good). However, to make it look realistic to the human eye, you will need materials to achieve the desired look.
Materials include:
- Fake blood (to make the stabbing look realistic)
- Knives (Either butter knife or a knife created using paper)
- Face paint (to create the illusion that the stabbing has caused a wound - purple/red face paint).
E) WHAT ARE THE RELEVANT PROPOSED COSTS?
In terms of costs, this will not be much due to the project being a school project (not a real production), however due to the materials used, there may be a small cost. For example, to get fake blood, this may need to be a few pounds depending on how much we would need/depending on whether college has enough for our desired look.
Also, for the knife and face paint, we can use butter knives from the canteen, which would not require a cost and use face paint from college (if more is needed then money will need to be spent to get the desired amount).
F) CAMERA AND STAGE DIRECTIONS
In terms of camera and stage directions, the main camera technique which will make the overall product look realistic is having the whip pan between both shots to make it look as though the character has actually been stabbed.
This will then be followed by having the characters staged in a way which makes the whole fight look realistic (e.g. mid shots of the character before they fight).
G) RISKS AND HOW TO MAKE THEM SAFE
Overall, the SFX will look as though it is dangerous and causing a risk from the audiences point of view. However, if this is carried out safely and with care, it will not be problematic or risky for anyone on set.
For example, relevant risk documents will be written up in advance to ensure that everyone on set is aware of what they are doing and aware of the consequences if anyone misbehaves. We will also ensure that we use certain materials instead of other materials to make the overall production as safe as possible (e.g. instead of a real, sharp knife, we can either use a paper knife or a butter knife).
EFFECT 2 - ANOTHER KNIFE THROW TO CHARACTERS NECK
A) WHAT IS THE EFFECT?
The second effect is that the two characters are fighting over another knife and as a result, the other character gets stabbed in the neck (the character who threw the knife before gets stabbed in the end).
The effect works by using camera angles as a trick to make it believable. For example, the camera will first do a mid shot of both characters 'fighting' over the knife (this would then be followed by multiple angles to give that sense of realism).
Finally, there would be an OSS shot from one characters point of view to show the knife "going into his neck' which would then be followed by blood squirting to make it look realistic. (we may decide to use CGI on the knife to make it look more realistic).
D) WHAT MATERIALS WOULD YOU NEED?
In terms of materials, you would not need many materials to make it look good (if you play around with lighting and angles it can make it look good). However, to make it look realistic to the human eye, you will need materials to achieve the desired look.
Materials include:
- Fake blood (to make the second stabbing look realistic)
- A second knife (Either butter knife or a knife created using paper)
- Face paint (to create the illusion that the stabbing has caused a wound - purple/red face paint).
E) WHAT ARE THE RELEVANT PROPOSED COSTS?
In terms of costs, this will not be much due to the project being a school project (not a real production), however due to the materials used, there may be a small cost. F) CAMERA AND STAGE DIRECTIONS
In terms of camera and stage directions, the main camera techniques which will make the overall product look good is by having a variety of angles to make the moment seem more realistic/create tension for the audience in a way which makes it seem as though the moment is 'building up'.
This will then be followed by having the characters staged in a way which makes the whole fight look realistic (e.g. mid shots of the characters fighting over the knife/OSS shot of character before stabbing).
G) RISKS AND HOW TO MAKE THEM SAFE
Overall, the SFX will look as though it is dangerous and causing a risk from the audiences point of view. However, if this is carried out safely and with care, it will not be problematic or risky for anyone on set.
